Planet Details: Lyons was a modest world when first discovered, with ample resources but few features that truly stood out among the hundreds of worlds being colonized at the time. Warm, with a very terrestrial climate, fertile soil, and a host of common metals within easy reach of mining interests, only the unusually high amount of volcanic activity, particularly along the central mountain ranges of the primary continent of Fedkirk, makes the world distinctive. To avoid the worst of the chronic eruptions and lava flows of the so-called Fedkirk Fire Chain, settlements on Fedkirk were established on the farthest coasts, leaving much of the interior region unspoiled and sparsely populated. Additional cities grew up on the smaller continents of Glastone, Leuben, and Pairse, including the planetary capital of Clovis‘ Point (originally named David‘s Point, but renamed to honor one of Lyons most outstanding citizens), which occupies the end of Glastone‘s northernmost peninsula. With mining and manufacturing concerns limited in scope, Lyons developed only a modest commercial industry, but enough to attain self-sufficiency in short order. When the Terran Alliance fell, the people of Lyons hardly felt the loss until the Terran Hegemony rose in its place and annexed the planet with ease. The Lyran Commonwealth, however, took an active interest in Lyons as a potential center for trade, and negotiated with the Hegemony for joint administration during the Star League era. Unfortunately, with the fall of the League, Lyons‘s prominence seemed to come to an end. In the Succession Wars that followed, the world was raided several times, as might be expected for a Lyran/Draconis border planet, but a dedicated aerospace defense force based on its single moon often discouraged the casual raiding force. In 2966, the Draconis Combine conducted a raid on Lyons. However, a Lyran aerospace force was hidden on Lyon's moon, Bier. Once the Kuritan forces were committed, the Steiner forces dove through the attacking force causing tremendous damage and chaos. Only one Kuritan ship escaped the attack. After the Succession Wars, Lyons rose in stature again as the lynchpin world of the so-called Lyons Thumb, a region of Lyran-occupied space extending into the Draconis Combine that remained under constant threat from House Kurita for decades. In 3025, Lyons was the primary base for the 12th Star Guards, a mercenary unit with a lineage dating to the collapse of the Star League. Two regiments were based on the planet - the 3rd Regiment, commanded by Hauptmann-General Mitch DeChavilier, and the 7th Regiment, commanded by Colonel Thomas Scovy. During the Fourth Succession War, the 12th Star Guards had moved off-world, participating in attacks on Kurita space and in 3029, the Kell Hounds mercenary unit, commanded by Colonel Morgan Kell established a base there, including the town of New Freedom. The town was home to numerous members of the underground Heimdall movement. The town was destroyed in a raid by the 3rd Dieron Regulars and most of the population was murdered by the Kuritan unit. The Kell Hounds returned to New Freedom and completely routed the Kurita forces, returning the planet to relative peace. Unfortunately, the rise of the Free Skye movement hindered defensive operations, and some experts say contributed to the planet‘s eventual fall to the Combine at the onset of the FedCom Civil War. [3085 Update] Lyons' mining interests, agricultural potential and fishery industry (as well as its proximity to the Lyran Alliance) prompted major investment by the Draconis Combine. Specifically, a number of underwater habitats were constructed, eventually forming whole cities housing more than half the world's population. Geothermal plants were also set up to take advantage of the Fedkirk Fire Chain's volatility, and the planet now does a brisk energy-export business. Also, large numbers of Combine citizens were encouraged to seek out new opportunities on Lyons, mainly operating deep-sea fishing rigs and the geothermal plants but also in terraced farming on the many islands scattered across Lyons. The world has also been assigned a strong garrison specialising in underwater combat tactics.

Planet Details: Lyons greatest claim to fame was the large number of volcanoes and volcanic activity that rocked the surface periodically. To avoid the problems presented by volcanoes, the inhabitants originally settled on the edges of the Fedkirk continent, leaving the center of the continent largely abandoned. The other continents (Glastone, Leuben, and Pairse) were settled the same way. Shortly after the immigrants arrived, the local mining industry produced enough for other industries to function. This let Lyons achieve self-sufficiency in short order.
Technological Development: Advanced world with access to many new technologies; world hosts universities; good medical care available, though without benefit of bionics and other cutting-edge technologies; basic microelectronics industry.
