Origins and History
When Prince Hanse Davion and Archon Katrina Steiner signed the May 3022
Federated Commonwealth Alliance Document that would one day make their two
states into one powerful nation, they must have foreseen the inevitability of
war. What they couldn't have imagined was that eventually the fighting would
involve their descendants battling it out for control of the realm. The FedCom
Civil War ripped the Federated Commonwealth apart, and laid waste to many
planets and military units. The rebuilding process has been difficult to say the
least.
Today, the Federated Suns once again stands separate from the Lyran
Commonwealth. First Princess Yvonne Steiner-Davion holds the throne on New
Avalon, and while relations have returned to a cordial level with the Lyran
Alliance, there are plenty of hard feelings to be had between the two realms.
Meanwhile, far more hostile enemies cover a good deal of the Federation's
borders. The Capellan Confederation, having assimilated the St. Ive's Compact,
remains a dangerous enemy. Sun-Tzu Liao would like nothing better than to regain
even more of his nation's former worlds from the Suns, but even a much weakened
AFFS is more than a match for overt Capellan action. Only a breakdown in
Capellan-Taurian relations likely kept the Concordat's invasion of the Federated
Suns from turning into a full-scale war. Certainly Duke Hasek's much vaunted
repulse of the Taurian invasion didn't hurt, but the Federation has yet to
launch serious reprisals against their much smaller periphery neighbor.
And of course, the Sun's greatest historical enemy, the Draconis Combine, is
stronger than they have been since 3050, due mainly to the welcoming of Clan
Nova Cat to their realm. The arrival of the Snow Ravens in the Outworlds
Alliance may have worried some 'experts', but the Dragon has to worry about the
newcomers just as much as the Federation does. The congenial relations with
Luthien from the days of the clan invasion are no longer seen, but neither does
the outright hatred from the Fourth Succession War era live on outside the
Draconis March.
With Duke Hasek slowly acquiescing to the First Princess' growing maturity and
power, and likely also due to the Duke's age, the Capellan March remains an area
of strength without thought of rebellion. Strikes against the Confederation are
well-planned, and carried out swiftly without thought of expansion. The Draconis
March, meanwhile, often simmers with desire for strikes against the Dragon.
Certainly Duke Tancred Sandoval is much less feisty than his father, but the
hatred for the Combine runs deep in his blood.
Of further note is Yvonne's apparent interest in regaining some of the Chaos
March worlds lost prior to the Civil War. Ingress was recently reclaimed by the
Suns, and other nearby planets are likely targets for reintegration as well.
Government
The structure of the Federated Suns government has managed to quickly resume its
pre-Commonwealth form over the last few years.
The First Princess is the pinnacle of the Federated Suns government.
Political Goals
The immediate political goal of the Federated Suns appears to be to remind its
neighbors that this still wounded nation remains a fearful enemy, and will soon
be back to full strength.
Armed Forces of the
Federated Suns
The AFFS took massive losses in the FedCom Civil War. Massive rebuilding and
refitting programs have restored some semblance of normalcy to the organization,
but there is much work yet to be done. Some units still have Federated
Commonwealth uniforms, although all insignia have been replaced, and the Steiner
'clam' helmets have all been destroyed, in many cases even before replacements
were available.
Of special note is the state of the Federated Suns Navy. The First Princess
ordered the creation of a new, cheap warship with massive staying power to
replace the losses from the Civil War. The first Davion III destroyers now
protect the Suns borders, and do so at a much lower cost than their more
complicated predecessors.

Defense Industry
Despite damage to some 'mech producing facilities, the Federated Suns' defense
industry has regained and surpassed its former capacity in order to assist in
the rebuilding of the AFFS. Additionally, a significant number of companies have
been created in order to refit mothballed 'mechs dating from before the clan
invasion. What will happen to these companies financially after the AFFS reaches
its desired size is a good question, but for now they are thriving.
Economy
The economy of the Federation took many hits during and immediately after the
FCCW, particularly due to disruptions with major trading routes to the Lyran
side of the border. However, the massive rebuilding expenditures jumpstarted the
economy in late 3070, and the economic boon continues to this day.
